James Peale (1872). See the Certificate with History of these Portraits in the frame, on pedestal in front. James Peale, the artist, was the brother of Chas. Wilson Peale. They each painted large original portraits of Washington which are now in the possession of the Federal Government, and the States of Virginia and Maryland. Rembrandt Peale, the son of Chas. Wilson Peale, and nephew of James, was but a boy at the time, and his Washingtons were painted in after life from recollection. Mr. Duncan, through his connection with the Peale family, obtained a promise of these portraits many years ago, and when it was decided to part with them, on account of the advanced age of the surviving children of James Peale, the pledge was fulfilled. Chas. Wilson Peale also painted miniature portraits of Washington and Lady Washington, now in the possession of the Custer family. The gold ring in the case was presented to the artist by Lady Washington. [P. 17; exhibited under heading: "Catalogue of Paintings."]
