"b. England, 1824. Studied art in England for a number of years, and came to America in 1854. Was elected National Academician, 1865. Member of the American Water-Color Society and the American Art Union. " Mr. Gay's subjects mostly relate to scenes and incidents drawn from childhood life, and in their composition and treatment he has no superior in American art. His style is fresh and unconstrained, and is marked by great richness of coloring and delicacy of finish. - Art Journal, September, 1875." [P. 41-42.]
