"HONTHORST--or Gherardo Delle Notti--born at Utrecht, in 1592. He travelled to Italy and became one of the best artists of his time. He excelled in representing figures by candle-light, which usually were as large as life; whence he obtained the name Gherardo delle Notti. His pencil is fine and firm, and his colouring has great force." No. 84.--ST. JEROME Reading by candle-light. The expression of interest and devotion in the Saint is very good, and the general effect of the picture is admirable. [P. 55.]
