Description:
The certificate of appointment for Postmaster Frank Merle Altland of Dillsburg, York County, Pennsylvania on April 28, 1911 is dated May 12, 1911 with signatures by President William Howard Taft and Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock, and bears a gold embossed seal of the Post Office Department. Mr. Altland’s tenure spanned from April 28, 1911 to April 13, 1915, during which time he moved the operation to a three-story building at the corner of York and Baltimore streets, where the post office occupied half of the ground floor from 1913 to 1971. At this location a modular structure, now in the collection of the National Postal Museum, was installed for the Post Office.
