Description:
The Post Office Department published this map of US airmail routes on September 1, 1946. Text at the bottom of the map promotes the service as faster, better, and cheaper than before. The map was created in anticipation of lower airmail rates. The cost to send a one ounce letter by airmail had been eight cents per ounce. The cost dropped to five cents per ounce on October 1, 1946.
Three insets on the left side of the map show mail routes to Alaska, Hawaii, and New Zealand. Two insets on the right side of the map detail airmail routes to Europe, Central America, and South America.
