The vivid orange poster with a helmet-wearing GI provided instructions on properly addressing mail bound for overseas military installations. Dated November 1967, the Post Office Department had these signs ready for display during the rush of holiday mailing, which required extra time for shipping to overseas destinations. Including the APO or FPO number designated the Army Post Office (operated by Army or Air Force) or Fleet Post Office (operated by Navy) nearest the addressee’s current location and equates to the city portion of a domestic US address. As in the example given on the poster, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for mail bound to Pacific bases and the APO number 96490 represented the 1st Calvary Division, Airmobile, stationed in Vietnam, located at An Khe as of November 1967.
