In 1851 engraver Thomas B. Welch traveled to Boston to create a portrait print that would faithfully reproduce the Athenaeum's 1796 painting of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart. Welch examined the original portrait but ultimately succeeded in producing his Washington print (issued in 1852) by working from three Southworth & Hawes daguerreotypes of the painting and utilizing the daguerreians' "new apparatus for enlarging and tracing upon transparent paper, a copy of the exact size of his intended picture." One of three surviving Southworth & Hawes whole plates of the Athenaeum portrait, this laterally reversed daguerreotype may have been among those that Welch employed.
