In 1935, the painter Hans Hofmann, who had recently immigrated to the United States from Germany, established a summer art school in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It was there that the photographer Bill Witt took this photograph during a “Friday Critique.” As an essential part of the curriculum, Hofmann would bring together students to discuss their works in detail. The school empha- sized studio practice, and students spent much of their time working from models and still lifes. For Hofmann, an artist excelled only when she or he had a complete sense of her or his chosen craft, including the history of its medium.
En 1935, el pintor Hans Hofmann, recién emigrado de Alemania, estableció una escuela de verano en Provincetown, Massachusetts.
