For its April 9, 1951, cover, Time asked its most prolific cover artist, Boris Chaliapin, to paint a portrait of Gloria Swanson, who was expected to win a Best Actress Oscar for her role in the movie Sunset Boulevard (1950). When Swanson lost the Oscar to Judy Holliday, Time focused instead on Broadway, tasking Chaliapin to paint a portrait of Barbara Bel Geddes, the twenty-eight-year-old “ingénue” who was getting rave reviews for her role in the comedy The Moon Is Blue (1951). Bel Geddes would later co-star with Kim Novak in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, Vertigo (1958). She may be best known, however, as Miss Ellie, the Ewing family matriarch on the long-running television series Dallas (1978–901).
