Born Los Chavez, New Mexico
Born to a family with deep Southwestern roots, Dennis Chavez was the first native-born Hispanic elected to the U.S. Senate. Although his schooling was cut short by his need to help support his family, he took night courses and worked for the city of Albuquerque as an engineer and later as a newspaper editor and translator. A job as a Spanish interpreter for a New Mexican politician led him to a job in Washington, D.C., and a law degree from Georgetown University. In 1930 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for his state. Chavez was appointed and then won a special election to the Senate in 1936; he served until his death in 1962. A defender of social equality, Chavez introduced a bill to prohibit employment discrimination on the grounds of race, creed, national origin, or ancestry in 1944. Despite its defeat by a southern filibuster, it laid the groundwork for the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Nacido en Los Chavez, New Mexico
