The second son of Robert E. Lee, William Henry Fitzhugh Lee was called “Rooney” to avoid confusion with his cousin Fitzhugh Lee of Clermont in Fairfax County. The cousins were both distinguished cavalry officers in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by Rooney’s father. Rooney rose to the rank of major general and was regarded highly by his superiors. Captured in mid-1863, he was released early the next year. At the close of the war he was second in command of the cavalry, behind his cousin Fitzhugh, and surrendered with his father at Appomattox.
