Abraham Lincoln faced one of the greatest challenges of any president: preserving the Union. After eleven Southern states seceded, Lincoln initially prioritized reunifying the Republic over abolishing slavery. However, as the Civil War (1861–65) intensified, his position shifted. In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation with the goal of freeing enslaved persons in Confederate-held areas. Two years later, he supported passage of the Congressional resolution that prohibited slavery nationwide. Lincoln sent this proposed Thirteenth Amendment to the states for approval but was assassinated before its ratification. Lincoln died on April 15, 1865, six days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant.
This portrait, by W. F. K. Travers, was displayed alongside the “Lansdowne” painting of George Washington (on view nearby) at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia—and twice offered to Congress—before it was acquired by the Rockefeller family. Its rich imagery includes portrayals of Washington and the Thirteenth Amendment. The globe is turned to Haiti, where Lincoln established diplomatic relations in 1862. A statue resembling The Freedman (1863), by John Quincy Adams Ward, alludes to the Emancipation Proclamation as it depicts a liberated person about to embark on his uncertain journey toward equality.
