Born Charles Town (now Charleston), South Carolina
Opulently dressed, twelve-year-old Ralph Izard is shown here just before departing for England to begin his formal education. A decade later, he returned to South Carolina to manage the extensive rice plantations he had inherited. He relocated to London in 1771 with the expectation of living off profits from his family’s estates. But when conflict between Britain and the colonies peaked in 1776, Izard moved to Paris, where he assisted in diplomatic efforts and secured funding to build warships for the colonies.
After the Revolution, Izard returned to Charleston and became one of the wealthiest planters of that time. By 1790, 602 enslaved people toiled on his lands. He was elected to the Continental Congress and served as one of South Carolina’s first United States senators. In the Senate, he helped build the federal court system but opposed the ratification of the Bill of Rights and the consideration of Quaker antislavery petitions.
