Known as Jorge before he anglicized his first name, George Farragut, who was born in Minorca, left Spain as a young man to become a merchant marine. He was soon promoted to the command of a small Spanish boat that conducted trade between Havana, Veracruz, and New Orleans. At the beginning of the American Revolution, Farragut joined the colonists' struggle for independence as a first lieutenant in the South Carolina navy. He fought the British at Savannah and was captured in Charleston in 1780. After being released in a prisoner exchange, he fought at the battles of Cowpens and Wilmington. By the end of the war, Farragut was a major in the cavalry. Farragut is an example of the numerous Hispanic soldiers and sailors who fought in the American Revolution. He is, however, perhaps best known as the father of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut.
