Proto-type model of a sailing canoe made by Masahiro Nomoto in 1999 (with the assistance of David and Chisto Dubreuil) at the SI Office of Exihibits Central (OEC). Made in preparation for making the full scale sailing canoe used in the NMNH exhibit, "Ainu: Spirit of a Northern People (April 30, 1999 - Jan. 2, 2000). Finely constructed with carved out bottom piece of wood and 4 curved panel pieces of wood (2 on each side) attached with cord tied through holes drilled in each panel. Four wooden cross pieces carved and inset in sides of canoe, attached with dowels and glue (?). Two carved decorative wooden pieces, painted black, are attached to either side of bow. Basketry sail on 2 wooden "poles", detached from boat except for cord tied to stern. Small wooden scoop bailer and anchor of wood, twine, and stone weight are attached to the canoe model with twisted twine. Included with the boat and sail are 10 wooden oars, 1 wooden rudder pole, and 17 wooden deck slats. Each oar has hole drilled through one end to allow attachment to pegs on the sides of the boat. The rudder, or steering mechanism, is shaped like the canoe oars but with T-shaped handle at the top instead of hole. Each deck slat has a V-shaped notch carved into one side and beveled edges on ends.
