Collector's notes: "Outer garment worn by little girls on holidays… [It leaves] the child's face exposed. Before a girl reaches puberty, she will veil in the manner of an adult woman." See Abercrombie "Saudi Arabia, Beyond the Sands of Mecca" in National Geographic, Vol. 129, No. 1 (Jan 1966) p. 32 for a photo of a young girl in such a garment.
Length of black cotton fabric, folded lengthwise and sewn together half way across the top, leaving a hole at the folded side. Area around the top seam is heavily embroidered with chain stitch in silver and bronze colored metallic thread, with flowers and looped lines. Bottom is unhemmed. A photo in the accession file shows how the garment is worn, with the face coming through the hole and the fabric hanging loose around the back of the head, the neck, and the shoulders. The embroidery frames the face and continues straight down the chest.
