Object Type:
Moccasin
Place:
Plains Northern, United States, North America
Accession Date:
31 May 1934
Notes:
From card: "Separate soft skin soles; uppers, one piece sewn together vertically at heel; transversely beaded in shades of blue glass beads."
In a letter dated May 11, 1934, the donor wrote: "In February 1919, my father, the late Col. Wm. B. Davis, USA, sent you some Indian equipment which he obtained from the Cut Head Sioux in 1878 ....In going over some of his belongings, I found another very beautiful ... bag [E368420] and a pair of small, beautifully beaded moccasins." See the related Accession No. 63135. Information in that accession identifies it as consisting of "Ethnological material ("Cut Head" Sioux Indian) collected by the donor in the late [eighteen] seventies and early eighties, while on duty at Fort Totten, In Dakota Territory - obtained by purchase from the Indians themselves - of the Devil's Lake Indian Agency (Fort Totten being located therein)." It is possible that the items under Accession 129619 have a similar provenance.
