Information from Leonid Lantsman, 2014: 19th C. Ottoman Empire yataghan. This example is of high quality construction with walrus ivory grips, now reinforced with silver due to an old break or repair. The scabbard is solid silver, gilded, chased and repoussed with various Ottoman designs. These examples were known to have been created and used in the Greek provinces and the scabbard work is associated with Epiros. The silver work is also associated Albania and the western Balkans as well, particularly the nodular silver protrusions on the top part of the scabbard and the silver band on the handle. The blade has Islamic caligraphy on both sides in koftgari.
