From card: "EMBROIDERED". Each panel features a pair of birds, surrounded by tree branches or flowers.
Lee Talbot, Textile Museum, noted that the 12 panels could possibly represent the months of the year. Note that, reading right-to-left, the seasonal references change from winter (pines), through spring (blossoms), summer, and fall (e.g. persimmons in late fall). The theme of nesting pairs of birds suggests that this would be a woman's screen, for use in a domestic space.
