Money

Ubangi River / Mobangi River, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa
Accession Date:
19 Nov 1889
Notes:
WAS ON EXHIBIT IN THE OLD AFRICA HALL (PSTORLOC=X700104600).
From card: "A brass rod, bent into an oval shape. Item with original number 47 is listed as "copper money made and used on Mobangi River, worth 1 cent each." Since the item bearing this number is brass, and since brass was not made aboriginally in the Congo area, it is likely that this item is incorrectly numbered. Possibly this is no. 38 (cat no 130,956). [handwritten] Mobangi & Ubangi same river (Carte Ethnographique de la Region NW du Congo Belge, Vanderkerken)"
