Card has been emended in pencil by unknown person to change attribution from Japanese to Chinese, acquired near Canton [Guangzhou], China, by Dr. James Morrow, who was on Perry Expedition. The expedition was in Canton in 1853 and 1854. Morrow was a South Carolina physician with interests in natural history and scientific farming. Rev. Samuel Wells Williams and Morrow were appointed to collect botanical specimens on the expedition.
This appears to be the plow illustrated as # 5 in plate opposite p. 38 in Morrow, James, and Allan B. Cole. 1947. A Scientist with Perry in Japan : the Journal of Dr. James Morrow. Edited by Allan B. Cole. Chapel Hill: the University of North Carolina Press. On p. 42 - 44 of the book, Morrow describes a walk he took October 12, 1853 in the countryside near Canton when he purchased the plow.
