Color print of numerous horse-drawn carriages in front of a roadside building identified as "Point View".
Description:
A hand colored print of a wide road in front of two wayside houses filled with carriages drawn by spirited horses, singles and in teams. The buggies have folded-back tops, straight footboards and flat bottoms. Couples and single drivers hold colorful lap rugs over their knees. They are all dressed in high fashion of the period. White frame hotels have verandas and attached shelters for horses. The hotel in the foreground has a flat roof and prominent sign reading: “Point View E. Sturce.” The hotel is the background has a shed roof and closed porch. The lane is lined with trees.
Thomas Kelly, of New York City, was one of the more successful publishers of the period, creating archetypal and idyllic views of all areas of life in America. Kelly's work is distinctive for strong coloring and vivid, forthright compositions.
