Description:
The inscription on the front of this cardboard star finder reads “Copyright 1957 / Anchor Optical Co. / Haddon Heights 1, N.J. / MANUFACTURERS OF FINE ASTRONOMICAL / TELESCOPES AND ACCESSORIES.” That on the back reads “STAR AND SATELLITE / PATH FINDER / EDMUND SCIENTIFIC CO. / 101 East Gloucester Pike / Barrington, New Jersey 08007.” The back also has a monthly list of planet locations for 1966, 1967 and 1968. The accompanying Instruction Manual is dated 1966.
Norman Wilson Edmund (1916-2012) graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 and, in 1942, established Edmund Salvage, a mail-order business selling lenses and prisms to fellow optical enthusiasts. In 1948, now operating as Edmund Scientific, he opened a larger facility in Barrington, N.J. That firm is now Edmund Optics.
Anchor Optical Co., a division of Edmund Scientific, obtained a copyright on the planisphere in 1957, naming Norman Edmund and Edwin F. Bailey as authors. The latter was an amateur astronomer and telescope maker who lectured at the Fels Planetarium at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
