Description (Brief):
Ukelele and Her New Doll written by Clara Loiuse Grant with illustrations by Campbell Grant and published by Simon & Schuster, 1951.
A native of California, Campbell Grant (1909-1992) was a graduate of the California School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and later worked at the Santa Barbara School of Arts. While in school he helped illustrate a book on the Chumash Indians, a Native American tribe prevalent in the region. This first encounter with an early Native American tribe led to a lifelong passion and interest in archaeology, early native cultures and Native American rock painting. Years later Grant was the first scholar to recognize the significance of rock art and published the principal book on cave paintings of the Chumash. Trained as an illustrator, print maker, wood block cutter and water colorist, Grant was a member of the Federal Arts Project, a program initiated by President Roosevelt to encourage work for unemployed artists during the Depression. While working for this important Public Arts program, Grant undertook a major project for the Santa Barbara High School that included a mural documenting the early history of California and its magnificent landscapes.
From 1934-1942, Campbell Grant worked as an illustrator and animator for Walt Disney, creating characters for Pinocchio, Dumbo, Snow White and Bambi. After the war, Campbell and his wife, Clara Louise, a children’s writer and educator, worked together to create a number of books that included the story of Ukulele about a native girl's first encounter with the white man.
