In 1954 Ladi Kwali became the first woman member of a pottery training center established in Abuja, Nigeria, and she remains its best-known artist. Already skilled in traditional methods of hand-built pottery, Kwali mastered the use of a throwing wheel, incised decoration and glazes. This shallow bowl came to the museum as a bequest from an American couple who spent many years living in Africa and collecting prints, textiles, woodcarvings and ceramics.
