Description:
A pin-back button advertising "Trixy" brand molasses. The button features a cartoon image of a “Picaninny” girl’s face. The girl has a large red bow with yellow circle decorations under her chin. She has nine small red ties in her hair. The background of the top two thirds of the button is yellow with darker yellow rays. The bottom third of the button has a blue background. Button reads, [TRIXY / LOUISIANA / OLD STYLE COOKING / MOLASSES / D. B. SCULLY SYRUP CO. / CHICAGO, ILL.].
Statement:
Objects depicting racist and/or stereotypical imagery or language may be offensive and disturbing, but the NMAAHC aims to include them in the Collection to present and preserve the historical context in which they were created and used. Objects of this type provide an important historical record from which to study and evaluate racism.
