Abstract:
The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting of mammal and bird specimens in Nevada and California, March 4 - October 22, 1891. Entries are dated and describe specimen collecting and travel details. They detail work with colleagues, destinations, distances traveled, daily activities and times of day, interactions local ranchers, weather, vegetation (including state of blooming), barometric readings. Bailey worked with Nelson and Coville and refers their travel to the Colorado River. Additional location information includes ranches and landowners' names. During Summer entries, they describe travel and collecting in Death Valley, with details like described above. In entries, there are detailed lists headed by type (lizards, birds, mammals, plants) with an overview or specific descriptions. There are notes indicating at what elevation ranges, plants appear, and their abundance. He worked with Dr. Fisher. Locations include Telescope Peak, Walkers Pass. At the end of the notebook are lists of specimen data per location for Whitney creek and Mount Whitney. Locations include Ash Meadows, Vegas valley, Death Valley and Furnace Creek, Nevada.
