The field notes and diary document Bohumil Shimek's work in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, August 17 - December 2, 1912; June 21 - 23, 1913; October 12 - 17, 1920. Entries are dated and often with location, travel details, weather, photographs taken, plant specimens collected, preparing slime mold and fungi specimens, lists of plants at locations, daily activities, individuals with whom worked, collecting in inland bodies of water, descriptions and geological sections of terrain including cuts into terrain (numbered), social interactions, lists of expenses. Some pages were tabbed, and some notes are crossed out. Locations are listed on the cover chronologically. Locations include Cedar Lake, Rice Lake, Storm Lake, Chariton, Indianola, Keokuk, Montrose, Irish Woods, Homestead, Clarkson, Weston, (no state specified); Forest City, Okoboji, Ocheyedan, Cherokee, Sac City, Lake View, Harlan, Council Bluffs, Muscantine, Amana, Floyd county, Sioux City, Iowa; Schuyler, Dodge, Wahoo, Valparaiso, Nebraska; and St. Louis, Missouri.
