Said to have been collected in 1869 during the Powell Geographic Expedition through the Colorado River, led by Major John Wesley W. Powell (1834-1902, later head of the US Geological Survey and the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology); formerly in the collection of William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951, a newspaper magnate and collector); purchased by MAI at a sale of Hearst’s collection held by the Parke-Bernet Galleries (New York City) in 1963.
