Scope and Contents:
An authority on Chinese painting, Lippe was deeply involved in the preparations for the Chinese Art Treasures Exhibition, the first exhibition in the United States of art from the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It emphasized painting and calligraphy. Lippe visited Taiwan in 1954 to view the paintings which at that time were still in storage in Taichung. He described his visit in a 1955 article "The Hidden Treasures of China: a Visit to Formosa," a draft of which is included in this subseries. Box # 5 contains information about his 1954 visit, including correspondence and notes on objects seen. It also includes material from 1958 and later about proposed objects lists, evaluation and description of objects and correspondence. Box # 6 includes notes and drafts for the Exhibition Catalog and correspondence with project colleagues James Cahill, Chuang Mo-ling, Chuang Shen, Max Loehr, John A. Pope and Wang Shih-chieh. Box #7 contains Object Index Cards on which Lippe described and evaluated paintings from the National Palace Museum Collection. Lippe evidently filed his notes by dynasty but at some point cards became jumbled.
