The photograph depicts Katherine Ake Agouabe, daughter of Ebrie notable, wearing traditional clothes and gold pendants. "Gold pendants were sometimes worn attached to the hair on festive occasions. This pendant human head is in a style typical of the lagoons region. Akesse Raphael, an Ebrie (now Kyaman) goldsmith, names the design as gobieheme, 'female healer'." [Timothy F. Garrard, 1989: Gold of Africa, Prestel]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for National Geographic and traveled to Africa from January 19, 1972 to mid April 1972.
