Scope and Contents:
This series includes biographical material, correspondence, subject files, project files, printed and digital material, and photographic materials donated to the Archives of American Art as a subsequent donation. Correspondence includes Deem's letters to museums relating to donating artwork and publications about his work. There are letters to Ullya Dydo, Christinane Hertel, and one from Alex Sichel to Ronald Vance. The bulk of the series consists of writings and notebooks. Included is Deem's handwritten memoir There's A Cow in Manhattan, which is about his life in New York in the 1960s and detail his daily routine, circle of friends, and reflections about his work. Twenty-three notebooks include a records of daily activities, notes on individual works of art, drafts of writings, and a few sketches. Among the other writings are poems, an essay, and a handmade book. Subject files consist of a blueprint of Deem's residence at 10 West 18th Street in New York City, notes on painting, and Deem's responses to a questionnaire from a graduate student writing her dissertation. Project files include biographical notes and brief writings on music by David Borden, as well as born-digital records. Also found are a script and slide list for Deem's presentation at Book Arts and a transcript of an interview with George Deem conducted by Peter Angelo Simon. Printed material includes clippings documenting Deem's early career as a dancer and choreographer, and reviews of his exhibitions. Photographic materials are digital prints of George Deem with Lee Guilliatt and Jean Rigg.
