Summary:
Album with seventeen specimens of flowering plants that were collected, dried, and arranged by Ralph L. Dixon and his wife, Hetty G. Dixon. The album contains specimens of 17 plants that were gathered by the Dixons, mostly in the vicinity of Washington D.C. (Georgetown, Great Falls, and the C. & O. Canal towpath) in 1924. Two of the final group of specimens were gathered in Montana and the Rocky Mountains in 1960.
General note:
The plant specimens are attached with thin paper strips to the blank leaves of a commercially-produced album ("The Montauk blotter book, for drying prints perfectly flat", produced by the firm of G. Gennert of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, consisting of sheets of cardstock paper overlaid with cream-colored fibers [probably silk], with tissue guardsheets of "paraffine paper").
Each plant specimen is accompanied by a typed paper label with scientific or common name, the area where the specimen was collected, and the month and year. It is unclear whether the date recorded on the label represents the month and year when the plants were collected, or the date when the plants were pressed and inserted in the album, or both.
Plants included in the album are identified on the labels as follows: Beech catkins; Spring beauty; Golden corydalis; Saxifrage; Gill-over-the-ground; Blue violets; Dutchman's breeches; Lance-leaved violet; White adder's tongue; Golden ragwort; Wild phlox, Blue bottle[?]; [Unidentified]; Bluebells; Jack in pulpit; Early meadow parsnip; and Toothwort.
The album was acquired with a typed note dated October 25, 2004 from the donor, Ralph L. Dixon of Billings, Montana (the son of the album's creators), who has provided some background information.
Leaves 7 and 9-12 are blank.
