This accession consists of records documenting the National Museum of African Art (NMAfA) Advisory Board meetings and its members during the tenure of Johnnetta B.
Cole, Director, 2009-2017. The board began in 1979 as the Commission of the Museum of African Art when the Smithsonian Institution first acquired the museum. With the name
change of the museum in 1981, the group became the Commission of the National Museum of African Art. By 2002, the name was officially changed to the National Museum of African
Art Board. Topics covered include strategic plans, financial reports, conservation data, collections, programs, meetings, public relations, and governance. Materials include
minutes, proposals, correspondence, reports, memoranda, brochures, news clippings, bylaws, and related materials.
