Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records that document activities relating to the establishment and general operation of the Smithsonian Institution Archives' cold-storage
environmental chamber at Front Royal, Virginia. The chamber, which opened in December 1994, was located in the old transmitter building at the Conservation and Research Center
(CRC), National Zoological Park. It was used for the storage of microfilm, audio and videotapes, and film reels. Due to high maintenance costs and lack of adequate oversight,
the Archives eventually removed its materials from the chamber and turned over all control of the facility to CRC in October 1997. Materials include memoranda pertaining to
proposals and planning, environmental chamber specifications, contractual requirements, and conservation assessment information.
