Biographical/Historical note:
Sylvanus Griswold Morley (1883-1948) was an American archeologist and Mayanist scholar. Alfred Vincent Kidder (1885-1963), an archeologist and scholar of the southwestern United States and Mesoamerica, took over Morley's directorship of Carnegie fieldwork at Maya sites in 1929, allowing Morley to focus on his work at Cichen Itza. From 1922-1940, Morley led excavations of Chichen Itza, a project funded by the Carnegie Institution. During this time, Earl Morris served as Morley's field director.
