Biographical / Historical:
Ankopaingyadete, also known as Anko, was a Kiowa warrior who kept a seasonal and monthly calendar that covered the years from 1864 to 1892. Originally written in a notebook, he copied the calendar onto hide at the request of Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) ethnologist James Mooney. Anko's original notebook is in the collections of the National Anthropological Archives. His original hide painting went missing after it was sent to be photographed for the BAE annual report circa 1895. Charles E. Rowell (1909-2004) was a Kiowa artist from Oklahoma, who claimed kinship with Anko. In the 1960s, he painted several calendars based on Anko's painted hide calendar, one of which is in the anthropology collections of the National Museum of Natural History. He also conducted research into and wrote up interpretations of the drawings in Anko's Calendar. Sources consulted: Greene, Candace S. and Thornton, Russell. The Year the Stars Fell. Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 2007. Mooney, James. "Calendar history of the Kiowa." In Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology 17 (part 1), 1895-96.
