Summary:
Photographs taken by Christopher DeCorse during his travels in Ghana, Gambia, Senegal, Mali and Cote d'Ivoire.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consists of slides taken by Christopher Decorse during his trips to Senegal, Mali, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana in the 1980s. The Ghanian images include scenes of Akwasidae festival celebrations, archaeological sites in Daccubie and Frederiksgave, Elmina's Bakatue festival, Fort Amsterdam in Abanzi, the Black Volta river, and various museums. Images of Sierra Leone include views of Freetown, Fourah Bay College, markets, a national dance troupe performance, and farms. Also includes images from Goree island in Senegal, Mopti and Dogon villages in Mali, harbor scenes in Banjul Gambia, and the stone circles in Wasu.
Biographical / Historical:
Christopher Decorse is an archaeologist and anthropologist specializing in the archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnography of Sub-Saharan Africa. In the 1970s and 1980s, Decorse traveled in several African countries to study archaeological sites, museums, and villages. As of 2023, Decorse is a professor and Chair of the Anthropology Department at Syracuse University.
